Inflammatory Bowel Disease encompasses a variety of disorders characterized by similar symptoms. The disease occurs when an inflammation arises along any part of the digestive tract, disrupting the normal digestive processes of the body. Though these disorders are sometimes seen more as nuisances than anything else, the damage being done can be extensive. It is recommended that you consult a Newport Beach gastroenterologist if you experience these symptoms.
In the US, the two most prevalent diseases under this umbrella term, Inflammatory Bowel Disease are Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis. There are several symptoms that are common in both manifestations.
Although part of the umbrella term of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis differ in the targeted locations in which they appear. Crohn’s Disease most commonly affects the end of the small intestine and the beginning of the colon, but it may damage any location of the gastrointestinal tract. In contrast, Ulcerative Colitis damages the large intestine.
In addition to the location difference, they also vary in the intensity of inflammation. Crohn’s disease, both healthy areas and inflamed areas are intermixed. Meaning, it does not occur along the entire gastrointestinal tract. Alternately, Ulcerative Colitis involves the continuous inflammation of the entire large intestine or colon.
Even though there are distinct differences between the two, they both exhibit potentially deadly results. If either goes untreated, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis have the potential to lead to further complications, including death.
